Deps Sakamata Shad 4.5" (11.4 cm): Soft Jerkbait with Leaping Darting Action for Perch and Zander
Among Japanese fishing lures, the Deps Sakamata Shad is one of the best-known soft jerkbaits. At 11.4 cm long, the new 4.5-inch version sits between the compact finesse sizes and the larger models from 5 inches upwards. As a perch lure and zander shad, the slim soft bait breaks out sideways and upwards with every twitch. This directly triggers the hunting instinct of perch, zander and pike.

Keel fins for the signature leap
The secret lies in the two keels on the sides of the body. When water hits them, they deflect the flow downwards. The lure responds with an upward leap. At the same time, the fins act like a rudder and keep the movement under control. The split tail follows every change of direction and flutters like that of a real baitfish.
Streamlined shape for wide glides
The body runs smoothly without edges or protrusions. Thanks to its low water resistance, this Deps soft plastic lure is effortless to work and glides far to the side after every input. It stays agile even at a brisk pace. This lets you provoke reaction strikes in open water, even from fish that would otherwise only follow the lure.
From the surface to the bottom
Rigged weightless on an offset hook, the shad imitates a small baitfish fleeing just below the surface and occasionally leaping out of the water. On a split shot or Carolina rig, it becomes an effective zander lure close to the bottom. Let the lure rise suddenly and sink again, as if a baitfish had spotted the predator. A proven trick from Japan is to set the hook so that the body is slightly bent. The keels then grip the water more strongly and the breakouts become more agile. When using it as a pike lure, always fish it with a bite-proof leader.
Material and rigging
The 4.5-inch version is made from a material with 10% salt content and weighs 6.5 g. It is designed for tear resistance, so the hook stays firmly in place and the lure tears less often. A marked hook-setting guide shows you where the hook point should exit so that the lure runs straight. Deps recommends offset hooks in sizes 2/0 to 3/0, bearing in mind that dimensions vary between manufacturers. Choose the hook to suit the body shape accordingly. Each pack contains eight shads.

Body shape: Smooth lines, minimal resistance, maximum glide!
The consistently smooth, flowing body line creates very little water resistance. This makes the Sakamata Shad exceptionally easy to break sideways and it glides remarkably far after every twitch. Even at high speed the sideways break stays controlled - exactly what triggers reaction strikes in open water, when the predator has no time to inspect the lure.
Keel and fin: The upward surge that defines the Sakamata Shad.
The keels moulded into both sides of the body produce that surging movement of a fleeing baitfish breaking upwards - simply rigging it on the hook is enough. The fin deflects the oncoming water downwards and thereby drives the lure upwards, while at the same time acting as a rudder that keeps the lure running true instead of letting it tip away uncontrolled.
Forked tail: The split tail trails every movement and shimmers along with it - it works like the tail fin of a real baitfish and carries the action on into the sinking phase.
Material and hook marking: The material is built for high tensile strength: the lure holds securely on the hook and tears out far less readily than comparable soft baits. A marking is moulded into the body that lets you insert the hook perfectly straight without twisting it - the prerequisite for the lure to break properly at all. Salt content, and with it the sink rate, varies by size; the larger models are also available as a Heavy Weight version with an extremely high salt content that runs deeper with no added weight and works steadily from the mid water column down to the bottom.
Universally usable: Fished weightless, the Sakamata Shad imitates baitfish fleeing towards the surface and repeatedly bursting clear of it. On a split shot or Carolina rig it can be worked near the bottom so that it looks like a fish suddenly rising off the deck and instantly disappearing again. A tip for more aggressive strikes: rig the lure with a slight bend in the body and the keels bite harder, making the break sharper and more erratic.
