Deps Sakamata Shad 4" (10.1 cm): Soft Plastic Lure with Leaping Darting Action for Perch and Zander
The Deps Sakamata Shad is one of the best-known stickbaits among Japanese fishing lures. Its secret lies in two lateral keels. As soon as the hook is rigged correctly, they create a leaping, twitching escape movement, just like fleeing baitfish. Perch and zander respond with spontaneous strikes.

Retrieve from the Surface to the Bottom
Fished without added weight, it imitates a baitfish fleeing towards the surface and occasionally leaping out of the water. On a split shot or Carolina rig, the Sakamata Shad shows its strengths close to the bottom. Short twitches of the rod make it rise from the bottom and sink again, as if a small fish had spotted the predator and was hastily seeking cover. In midwater, it also works well as one of the mid strolling lures on a light jig head.
Well-Designed Body with Keels and Forked Tail
The well-designed body with keels and forked tail keeps water resistance low. As a result, the lure responds to every input and glides far to the side after each twitch. Even on a brisk retrieve it stays agile and triggers reaction strikes in open water. The keels deflect the oncoming water downwards and push the lure upwards. At the same time, they act as a rudder and keep it stable while leaping. The forked tail follows every movement like the tail fin of a real baitfish.
Tip from practice: rig the hook so that the body is slightly bent. This enhances the effect of the keels and produces livelier, more erratic leaps.
Material, Rigging and Use
The material with 5% salt content is particularly tear-resistant, holds the hook securely and is less prone to tearing. A marker on the body helps you rig the hook straight and without distortion. Deps recommends a size #1/0 offset hook, and each pack contains eight soft baits, each 10.1 cm long and weighing around 3.7 g.
With its slim profile, this Deps soft plastic lure is a versatile choice among perch lures and zander lures, and a slender zander shad. Even pike are tempted from time to time.

Body shape: Smooth lines, minimal resistance, maximum glide!
The consistently smooth, flowing body line creates very little water resistance. This makes the Sakamata Shad exceptionally easy to break sideways and it glides remarkably far after every twitch. Even at high speed the sideways break stays controlled - exactly what triggers reaction strikes in open water, when the predator has no time to inspect the lure.
Keel and fin: The upward surge that defines the Sakamata Shad.
The keels moulded into both sides of the body produce that surging movement of a fleeing baitfish breaking upwards - simply rigging it on the hook is enough. The fin deflects the oncoming water downwards and thereby drives the lure upwards, while at the same time acting as a rudder that keeps the lure running true instead of letting it tip away uncontrolled.
Forked tail: The split tail trails every movement and shimmers along with it - it works like the tail fin of a real baitfish and carries the action on into the sinking phase.
Material and hook marking: The material is built for high tensile strength: the lure holds securely on the hook and tears out far less readily than comparable soft baits. A marking is moulded into the body that lets you insert the hook perfectly straight without twisting it - the prerequisite for the lure to break properly at all. Salt content, and with it the sink rate, varies by size; the larger models are also available as a Heavy Weight version with an extremely high salt content that runs deeper with no added weight and works steadily from the mid water column down to the bottom.
Universally usable: Fished weightless, the Sakamata Shad imitates baitfish fleeing towards the surface and repeatedly bursting clear of it. On a split shot or Carolina rig it can be worked near the bottom so that it looks like a fish suddenly rising off the deck and instantly disappearing again. A tip for more aggressive strikes: rig the lure with a slight bend in the body and the keels bite harder, making the break sharper and more erratic.
