Deps Balisong Minnow 100 SP: The Suspending Jerkbait for Cold Days

When predators barely respond in cold water, the Deps Balisong Minnow 100 SP comes into its own. Japanese manufacturer Deps, renowned for high-end fishing lures, has expanded its sophisticated jerkbait with a suspending version. It was developed specifically for sluggish fish from late autumn into spring. At 10 cm in length and 17 g in weight, it is a versatile choice among perch lures and equally strong among zander lures and pike lures.

Action: Rolling, Flashing, Clicking

On a steady retrieve, the Deps Minnow runs deeper than the floating version. It rolls at high frequency almost onto its side, sending out strong flashes. Short twitches produce a distinctive clicking sound reminiscent of fleeing baitfish. Its light pull also makes it a search bait for covering clear water quickly.

Variable Balancer System for Reaction Strikes

Inside, a steel weight slides back and forth when the lure is jerked. The shifting centre of gravity creates sharp, unpredictable darts that tempt even passive fish into striking. A deep rumble adds to the appeal. Since its internal redesign, size 100 carries the same large casting weight as size 130. This ensures stable flight and long casting distances.

Suspending in the Strike Zone

During pauses, the Balisong Minnow holds a slightly nose-down posture with a subtle shimmy. Thanks to the sinking line, it reaches an effective depth of around 1.8 m when fished jerk and pause. On bottom contact, the front treble keeps the lure clear of obstacles. Tested with fluorocarbon of around 6.4 kg breaking strain.

Well-Designed Hook Arrangement

The well-designed hook arrangement lets the V-shaped belly sit tight against the size 4 trebles so they do not flutter. As a result, the lure stops and starts more cleanly. Despite the strong hooks and size 3 split rings, the action remains lively even on a slow retrieve. This makes it a dependable zander minnow for tough days.

Practical Tips

If the hardbait tracks to the left, use pliers to bend the eye very slightly to the right, and vice versa. Replacement eyes with a 6 mm diameter fit. Do not store the lure in direct sunlight or a hot car, as the trapped air expands and can deform the body.

High pitched rolling action: Faster, crisper, more aggressive!
The characteristic roll almost onto its side is held slightly tighter on the suspending model than on the floating version - in return it responds far more directly, works faster and throws off bright flashes with every turn. Added to that is the resonant, low-pitched sound from inside the body. Despite the intense action the pull on the rod stays surprisingly light: the Balisong Minnow 100 SP can therefore be fished as a fast-moving search bait and handles even high-speed retrieves in clear water without blowing out.
Deeper and sharper: On a steady retrieve the suspending model runs one step deeper than the floating version. Fished with jerks and pauses, the line sinks along with it and the effective depth range reaches roughly 1.8 m - precisely the zone the fish hold in during the cold season.
Holding in the mid water column: The lure comes to a stop with a brief shudder and hangs there in a natural, slightly nose-down posture instead of rising or sinking. It is tuned to suspend at around 7 °C water temperature - exactly the conditions from late autumn through spring, when sluggish fish need a lure that stays put for a long time. Inner structure and Variable Balancer System: The internal layout was completely reworked: the 100 has since carried a large moving weight that gives a stable flight attitude and outstanding casting distance. The steel weight of the Variable Balancer System slides forwards and backwards when the lure is jerked. The shifting centre of gravity produces sharp, unpredictable darts that draw reflex strikes from sluggish fish, and at the same time a low-frequency sound that reaches fish holding deeper down.
V-belly and hook setting: The V-shaped belly seats the treble precisely and damps its rattling across the whole surface. This noticeably improves how instantly the lure starts swimming from a standstill and how cleanly it comes to rest. Although oversized heavy-wire hooks are fitted, the lure keeps its sharp action even on a slow retrieve with heavy line. Hooks: size #4, split rings: size #3.
Marking and care: The type designation is printed on the back on the suspending model and on the belly on the floating model - so the two versions can be told apart at a glance in the box. For full performance a fine adjustment is worthwhile: if the lure tracks to the left, bend the eye slightly to the right with pliers; if it tracks to the right, bend it to the left.
Storage note: The hollow body is sensitive to heat. In direct sun, in a car or in a tackle box that has heated up, the trapped air can expand far enough to deform or crack the body. In summer, store it cool and out of the sun.
