While other fishing lures get snagged, the Deps Evoke 1.2 is just getting started. Japanese manufacturer Deps developed this crankbait with a clear aim. It is designed to noticeably increase your efficiency around heavy cover. After numerous prototypes, the result is a fish-catching tool that has exceeded the original expectations.

Perch Lures for Spots Once Reserved for the Jig

Perch holding tight to bushes, fallen trees or weed edges rarely leave their cover. This is exactly where the Evoke excels. In narrow channels where casting is impossible, it can be pitched with precision. A classic spot for jigs and Texas rigs thus becomes hardbait territory.

Self-Righting Balance and Extremely Fast Action

Deps has dispensed with internal partitions and carefully refined the wall thickness of the ABS body. The large hollow chamber gives it the balance of a roly-poly toy. After contact with an obstacle, the lure does not roll onto its side but rights itself immediately and continues on a straight path. The result is an extremely high-frequency action once thought barely achievable with ABS. High buoyancy and a shallow diving angle prevent unnecessary snags. As a side effect, the split ring and treble produce a clicking sound. For Deps pro Kenta Kimura, this is a genuine fish-catching factor on Lake Biwa and beyond.

Well-Thought-Out Details for Casting and Hook-Setting

Despite its fixed weight, this Deps crankbait casts a long way thanks to its optimised body shape. The RYUGI Pierce Treble TC Coat trebles are graduated: size 6 at the front, size 4 at the rear, as many bites come at the tail. Selected colours are UV-reactive and were inspired by Bassmaster Elite pro Masayuki Matsushita. At 5.5 cm and 11 g, the Evoke runs around 1.2 m deep on lines up to about 7 kg breaking strain, and about 1.0 m on heavier lines of around 9 to 11 kg.

Tips on Tuning and Storage

If the lure runs to one side, carefully bend the eye in the opposite direction with pliers. Do not store the hollow body in direct sunlight or in a hot car, as the trapped air can expand and deform the lure.

Every millimetre inside the lure has been put to use: internal dividers have been removed entirely, the wall thickness reworked in detail and the hollow chamber thus made as large as possible. The result is a weight distribution that makes the lure right itself the instant it is knocked off balance. This balance enables an extremely high action pitch that was considered impossible with conventional ABS crankbaits. At the same time the body shape was refined until air resistance was low enough for long, effortless casts despite the fixed weights.
Tracking straight through cover: Buoyancy and centre of gravity are tuned so the lure does not hit structure too hard. The shallow diving angle and high buoyancy make the Evoke exceptionally good at clearing obstructions. After contact it does not flash off to the side but rights itself immediately and keeps tracking straight - which lets you pull it through narrow gaps in timber, brush and weed beds that used to be jig and Texas rig territory only. Even in tight channels where a cast is impossible, you can reach the fish by pitching.
Factory hook setup: Fitted with Ryugi Pierce treble hooks in TC coating. On the 1.2, size #6 sits at the front and the one size larger #4 at the rear. This step-up is deliberate: the smaller front hook improves how cleanly the lure clears obstructions, while the larger rear hook grabs exactly where most strikes occur. It also shifts the centre of gravity rearwards and thereby improves casting distance considerably. Split rings: size #2.
True tune: To get the full performance out of it, a fine adjustment is still worthwhile: if the lure tracks to the left, bend the eye slightly to the right with pliers; if it tracks to the right, bend it to the left - a little at a time until it runs perfectly straight.
Storage note: The large hollow chamber is sensitive to heat. In direct sun, in a car or in a tackle box that has heated up, the trapped air can expand far enough to deform or crack the body. In summer, store it cool and out of the sun.
