Anyone who goes surf fishing for flatfish, cod or whiting on the North Sea or Baltic coast knows the problem: current and swell drag the rig across the bottom until it ends up uselessly in the backwash. How the breakaway weight works

Each side of the weight carries two wire grips, held in small green retainers. On impact, the grips dig into sand or gravel and anchor the rig even in strong current. The firm resistance on the bottom also supports the self-hooking effect when a fish takes the bait.

When you strike or retrieve, the grips release from the retainers and fold back. This lets the weight glide far more easily across the bottom, noticeably reducing the risk of snags. Before the next cast, simply push the grips back into the retainers.

Zinc instead of lead: the environmentally friendly alternative

Conventional fishing sinkers and fishing weights made of lead end up in the water through snags and abrasion.
